Two awards in the bag for Nampak Sacks

MEETING customer requirements for the lightest weight, fit-for-purpose 12,5kg flour paper bag, Nampak Sacks developed a new bag for Snowflake Flour – a gold medal winner in the food category at the 2009 Gold Pack Awards and nominated for an award at this year’s WorldStar Packaging Awards.

With Improved print qualities for increased shelf shout, the traditional and timeless 150-year-old Snowflake bag of flour look, which consumers associate with baking, was purposefully kept during the new product development.
The actual flour has also been retained due to dead fold properties that reduce product sifting through the fold areas of the bag, and maintain the pack’s well-known square shape. The new flour bags also have higher slip angle resistance, giving more stability to the bag during packing and transit, with added stiffness for improved stability and rigidity through the filling, closing and palletising process.

Adding to Nampak Sack’s WorldStar award-winning packaging is the PRO cement sack developed for NPC-Cimpor, also a 2009 Gold Pack gold medal winner. Nampak Sack’s new PRO Cement sack also retains its legendary status, while tackling some tricky production issues, namely becoming more cost effective and meeting the requirements of high-speed filling equipment.

Additionally, the Pro cement sack has been made stronger to better endure the rigorous palletising and distribution process of getting cement to point of use. The increased strength is due to the replacement of micro-perforated paper with stronger, high porous paper that keeps the bags clean of cement dust, which can no longer escape through perforations.

Even though the basic sack appearance and purpose fit remains almost the same, the new cement sack has better quality print to best portray brand identity, product specifications and mix recommendations. And, in keeping with the expectations of an environmentally-conscious society, the bag is fully compostable when clean, while the ‘yield saving’ reduces the number of trees harvested to produce a bag.
