An impressive bag of tricks from Nampak Sacks
As part Africa’s largest packaging manufacturer, Nampak, Nampak Sacks is one of the African packaging industry’s leading manufacturers of paper based sacks and bags. As such, Nampak Sacks manufactures a quality range of Kraft-based sacks, high gloss sacks and bags, and self-opening bags, designed in line with highly specific customer requirements.
A bag is not just a bag with Nampak Sacks as the company’s cost-effective range of products are designed to optimise the packing and distribution processes, and offer effective protection as well as visible on-shelf appeal, across a diverse range of market segments. It is for this reason that their current advertising campaign states “for every mountain, we have a range”, meaning that whatever the product type – be it sugar, cement, flour, charcoal and much more – Nampak Sacks has a packaging solution that quite literally moves mountains of numerous products every day.
The varied markets to which Nampak Sacks’ extensive range of multi-wall paper, foil and film-based packaging solutions are supplied include the construction, chemical, food, agriculture and retail trade industries. Nampak Sacks’ product offering to these industries is diverse, and includes self-opening bags (SO Bags, [Status]), which are generally constructed from one or two plies of bleached Kraft and are suitable for packs of between 500g and 12.5kg. The company’s high gloss sacks and bags, which can be printed in up to eight colours using high quality flexographic printing, can include the lamination of an outer layer of printed, coated polyester which provides superb gloss, ideal for value-added products with its excellent moisture and/or fat protection.
The company’s multi-wall sacks are capable of carrying up to 50kgs and are a cost-effective and environmentally sound solution to packaging requirements for products such as cement. Further options can be included to enhance on-shelf appeal and functionality, such as handles, micro perforations and valve type closures – for example a “sift proof” ultrasonic sealable valve.
As is seen in their wide range of variations, tailoring products for specific customer requirements is perhaps where Nampak Sacks really comes to the party, offering individualised, industry-leading innovation. Two recent examples of what Nampak Sacks is capable of includes their 2kg windowed sugar bag for Illovo sugar and the more economically sized 20kg cement bag for Afrisam Cement.
The windowed sugar bag allows Illovo’s consumers to actually see the sugar in the bag and easily identify their preferred sugar. This bag is crucial in markets with large numbers of illiterate consumers who struggle to differentiate between white and brown sugar through on-pack print and pack colour alone. Demonstrating their commitment to strategic partnerships, Nampak Sacks is also a large, and proud, part of Illovo Sugar’s move into Africa, recently commissioning a new paper bag line to supply Illovo out of Nampak’s Zambia operation.
Nampak Sacks’ 25kg Afrisam cement bag is a South African first and addresses the fact that consumers don’t always need larger quantities of cement, especially for smaller, do-it-yourself projects around the home. This bag is easier to carry, load and transport in everyday vehicles, as well as more convenient to store at home. It also reduces wastage as the contents of a smaller bag are almost always fully utilised.
On the production side, Nampak Sack’s manufacturing and process technology is continuously being upgraded at the company’s KwaZulu-Natal based plant, which is ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 22000 compliant.
