Monitoring, measuring and testing just the tip of Nampak R&D’s iceberg

Today, packaging must not only serve as the vessel to carry a product, but must also protect the integrity of the contents, protect the consumer, enhance shelf-life, be easy to use, carry a low cost and reflect the values which are integral to the brand. Behind the scenes of packaging development, and making these fundamentals of packaging a reality - in conjunction with Nampak’s various divisions - is Nampak R&D (Research and Development, [Status]).

As one of the world’s leading packaging research and development bodies, Nampak R&D has extended its role in Africa’s largest packaging company, Nampak, to one that encompasses far more than monitoring, measuring and testing alone.

At Nampak R&D, scientists, technologists and technicians have state-of-the-art analytical equipment and design tools at their disposal to apply their knowledge in different fields such as materials science, chemical analysis, microbiology and food & beverage science and technology. They are further supported by an extensive database compiled from decades of experience, case studies, strategic packaging intelligence and extensive technical information sources to draw upon.

The laboratory services available to Nampak customers through R&D are all-encompassing and extend far beyond the usual roles often associated with packaging research and development facilities. A few of R&D’s crucial services include:

• Metallurgy, paper and plastic technology
• Coatings and inks technology
• Aerosol technology
• Electrochemical and surface studies
• Container development
• Packaging optimisation by finite element analysis & computer aided modeling
• Analytical chemistry
• Microbiology
• Food and beverage technology
• Thermal process validation
• Shelf-life studies
• Knowledge management and packaging information.

In addition to what is an already impressive support system, Nampak R&D recently joined the world renowned Emergency Response Service (ERS, [Status]) of TNO Triskelion BV, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, [Status]).

As an ERS member, Nampak R&D – and therefore the whole of Nampak - has access to TNO Triskelion’s Emergency Response Service, which provides immediate support in the event of a crisis by drawing on a cluster of international experts in the fields of chemical analysis, microbiology, aroma and taste research, packaging (including migration testing, [Status]), toxicological risk evaluations and legislation.

ERS is on full-time standby and R&D’s ERS membership further bolsters the scientific support for the Nampak Group and its clients, helping enhance Nampak’s high quality and safety record.
