Nampak leads the pack with award-winning design
Packaging design can make a profound difference on the sales of a product, but as the players in this increasingly competitive industry get up to speed, it is becoming progressively more difficult to make one brand’s packaging stand out above the rest. Nampak, Africa’s largest packaging manufacturer, has the recipe for success, recently taking home 14 awards at this year’s Gold Pack Awards – Africa’s premier packaging awards programme. A few of Nampak’s winning packs illustrate how their customers got ahead through innovative packaging design:
A more accurately chilled beer
No need to stick your hand in the ice bucket to test the temperature of your drink, simply wait until the snow castle turns blue! This is the idea behind SAB Miller’s extremely “cool” Castle Lite can produced by Nampak Bevcan.
The can features a thermochromic ink “snow castle” graphic, which reacts to temperature and clearly indicates when the can is ice cold by changing to an icy blue colour. Furthermore the interior of the can features a new electric blue lining. The icy, electric blue inner lining of the can is a first for Nampak Bevcan and SAB Miller, and creates the subtle impression that the beverage is colder. The blue lining is not only appealing but as with all cans also ensures that the content stays as fresh as the day it was filled. The can’s tab - also in electric blue - has a laser-etched “snow castle” courtesy of Nampak I&CS.
The do-it-all carton
When Camelthorn Breweries asked for a 12-bottle pack to differentiate their premium beer, Nampak Cartons & Labels developed one of the most multi-functional packs to hit the shelves in recent years.
The multipurpose carton is designed to hold and display a combination of all seven of Camelthorn’s beer variants, resulting in the customer requiring just one stock-keeping unit as opposed to producing and storing seven separate cartons. As this is a gift pack, the carton can also hold a combination of beer bottles and promotional glasses.
The 12-pack’s dividers are formed from the carton’s own flaps, not inserted as separate pieces, thus reducing hassle in erecting packs, and eliminating individual pieces that could otherwise potentially generate litter.
The new pack also sports higher quality graphics than what are usually achievable on corrugated shipper cartons by way of lithographically printing a top sheet prior to laminating it to the corrugated board. This method delivers a superior finish for on-shelf branding as opposed to the more traditional flexographic printing on corrugated shipper cartons.
A prize catch for fish
When retailers were struggling with Lake Harvest’s aging fish carton, Nampak Hunyani Corrugated introduced a more structurally sound, 100% recyclable pack that was better suited to the rigorous cold supply chain.
The resulting one-piece, self-erecting carton with in-folding corners makes for a stronger, stackable structure with better seals. And whilst it does not have the aid of a water resistant/barrier coating, the carton is still 100% waterproof.
Lake Harvest’s cartons are now reaching the retailers intact and undamaged, and with their simple yet eye-catching design, they’re adding more value to the Lake Harvest brand. Even customers who were previously fixed on poly plastic packaging are looking to the new style carton design for its ease of handling, stacking, space saving and temperature retention.
