Infini bottle reaps international awards success

Nampak Plastics, has triumphed at the international DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, winning silver in the Packaging Innovation category for its multi-award-winning Infini bottle.

The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, now in its 26th year, is an international, independently-judged competition that honours innovations in packaging design, materials, technology, processes, and service across the entire packaging value chain. Inaugurated in 1986, the DuPont Packaging Awards programme is now recognised as the leading packaging awards scheme in the world.

In winning the coveted prize, the Infini bottle fought off stiff global competition from nearly 200 entries, to join 15 other winners across the world. Previous winners of the award include global giants Heinz, Coca-Cola and Unilever.

Infini has claimed numerous awards on a national and international scale, winning Green Product of the Year at the British Engineering Excellence Awards in 2013 and being awarded silver for sustainability at the WorldStar Awards in the same year.

Nampak introduced Infini to the British market in 2012, as an innovative and lightweight range of high density polyethylene (HDPE, [Status]) milk bottles. It has resulted in the world's lightest 4-pint (2.27 litre, [Status]) 32g bottle, which contains up to 20% less material than a standard bottle, and up to 30% recycled HDPE.

Furthermore, based on Infini being the bottle of choice, it could save the UK milk packaging industry 34,000 tonnes of plastic resin per annum, and 16,000 tonnes of carbon.

Commenting on the win, Eric Collins, Managing Director of Nampak Plastics, said: “Nampak Plastics is delighted to be internationally recognised by the DuPont Awards. We’re extremely proud of the efforts we take to ensure Nampak continues to make technological advancements, while also maintaining our responsibility to improve responsible packaging. We are also currently exploring how we collaborate with new partners so that the Infini design can benefit customers in new markets and geographies outside of Diary.”

"The DuPont Packaging Awards program recognizes and honors packaging excellence around the globe," said Yasmin Siddiqi, DuPont Packaging Awards Program leader. "This year’s honorees demonstrate exceptional creativity in Technological Advancement, Responsible Packaging and Enhanced User Experience. These breakthroughs are revolutionizing the role of packaging and will be a catalyst for inspiring future innovations.”

More than half a billion Infini bottles have been sold, stocked in retailers including Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons within the UK. Infini will also be manufactured under license for the Australian & New Zealand markets in 2014, and discussions are in progress with licensing partners in the US, European, Asian and African markets for liquid dairy and non-dairy bottle packaging applications.
